Hot Damn folks! This whole training thing is starting to pay off! A stream of requests has come in today, and I got to pass nearly all of them off to the New Girl! Eureka!
Also it is Friday, I turn 27 this weekend, I just got a coupon for 50% off Chaco shoes (Hey fellow soon-to-be-PCV’s—did you know that we get a 50% discount from Chaco? Just go to their website and call the customer service number. They’ll send you an order form—you have to order direct through them and it takes 2-4 weeks, but saving $50 is very awesome.), I’m going to yet another BBQ this weekend, and I have French tonight FOR THREE HOURS.
Normally that last part would belong on another type of list, but Internet, have I told you how I’ve turned a corner with the French language? Suddenly it’s kind of fun. Not because I’ve dramatically improved or anything—although we did just learn the past tense—booya! No, more because the sweet older gentleman in my class complimented my accent. Ha! I’m pretty sure my accent is border-line atrocious (although no longer truly atrocious, thank you very much), but Guilluame* seemed sincere when he said I am a “pleasure to listen to”, and it made me feel great!
I know it’s very defeatist, but until that moment about three weeks ago, I had kind of just decided that there was no way the language learning portion of the experience wasn’t going to suck. I was wasting so much mental energy thinking about how I will get through that learning process that I never even stopped and considered that maybe, just maybe, parts of that process could be fun. Then I went to a study group with some guys from my class, and we spent a lot of time laughing and Guilluame said that nice thing to me and it was like a light bulb went off. Since then class has been much more enjoyable and even though I know there are sure to be stress-filled days ahead when I just want to shout ‘French Sucks!’ IN ENGLISH, there is no reason for me to be dreading it now.
I think it must be a strange quirk of my personality that has me somehow less phased by the imminent threat of diarrhea than by mixing up my indefinite articles.
